Setup Window

The Setup window serves for setting parameters which define global characteristics. The current settings are displayed in the bottom of this page. Most of the time you will leave them as they are.

However, there is one feature that you might be important if you want to start an application that produces graphic outputs. You can specify a graphics device (plotter, printer, file) here in the upper part of the Setup window. Just select one of the listed options and press the Close button.

Your choice of a file format will depend on serveral considerations. GIF files are created by default. Such files can easily be saved and printed using Netscape menu bar. High quality prints for publication require Postscript format. If you want to edit your result files with other software tools you may select CGM format. PNG format allows you to change color and thickness of lines in your graphics. Some formats you can not view in W2H. In this case use FTP to download these files.

Session environment

The GCG session is influenced by the environment variables and by logical names and symbols. Normally there is no need to change them during a session. But there are cases where it is valuable. For example you could wish to define, or to change the logical name MYDATA to get access to your private data files in a different location. Be careful and do not change what you don't know.

This section serves also to view a global log file containing a brief history of your previous sessions. This logging can be stopped, and/or again started.

Graphics devices

The middle window displays also the additional definitions of the selected graphics device. It is displayed when you click on an apply checkbox beside selected graphics device. The display is a little different for various types of graphics devices.

Note that it is not possible to change definitions of a graphics device coming from the common configuration file (sitedevices). These devices are prefixed with the word Site. Here, you can specify:
